Beautiful places to visit at Bandung

Tangkuban Perahu

The Tangkuban Perahu Plateu

Tangkuban Perahu is an active volcano 30 km north of the city of Bandung, the provincial capital of West Java, Indonesia. It is a popular tourist attraction where tourists can hike or ride to the edge of the crater to view the hot water springs upclose, and buy eggs cooked on its hot surface.

The name translates roughly to "fell place of (a) boat" in Sundanese, referring to the local legend of its creation. The story tells of "Dayang Sumbi", a beauty who lived in West Java. She cast away her son "Sangkuriang" for disobedience, and in her sadness was granted the power of eternal youth by the gods. After many years in exile, Sangkuriang decided to return to his home, long after the two had forgotten and failed to recognize each other. Sangkuriang fell in love with Dayang Sumbi and planned to marry her, only for Dayang Sumbi to recognize his birthmark just as he was about to go hunting.

In order to prevent the marriage from taking place, Dayang Sumbi asked Sangkuriang to (1) build a dam on the river Citarum, and to (2) build a large boat to cross the river, both of which has to be competed before the sunrise. Sangkuriang meditated and summoned mythical creatures to do his bidding. Dayang Sumbi saw that the tasks were almost completed and called on her workers to spread red silk cloths east of the city, to give the impression of impending sunrise. Sangkuriang was fooled, and upon believing that he had failed, kicked the dam and the boat in construction, resulting in severe flooding and the creation of Tangkuban Perahu from the hull of the boat.

MARIBAYA

The Maribaya warm springs emerge from near the fault trace of the almost east west trending Lembang Fault which is downthrown to the north. The uplifted southern block consists of older andesitic volcanic products from Tangkubanperahu and other old eruptive centres to the east while on the north the outcrop is mainly of younger Tangkubanperahu pyroclastics. The main craters of Tangkubanperahu are 9 km to the NW of Maribaya and Bandung city is about 11 km to the SW.

It is possible that the Lembang Fault is tapping a low temperature resource at depth but the springs may also be from an outflow of Tangkubanperahu which reach the surfce where the flow intersects the fault.

Two near neutral springs occur at Wisata Maribaya, Maribaya which lies 9 km south-east of Tangkubanperahu at the foot of an east-west scarp which may be associated with Lembang fault. The springs flow from the banks of a stream where it flows over two waterfalls created by basaltic lava flows. The waters have temperatures ranging between 38° and 47°C, a 8-9 and are slightly turbid and yellowish in colour. Where they emerge from the rocks they are often associated with carbonate and argillic deposits. The total flow is approximately 12 kg/s.

Whilst these springs have been listed as a separate prospect, they may in fact be associated with an outflow from the Tangkubanperahu complex.

Gedung Sate

Satay Building

The decision of the government to move some departments from Batavia to Bandung was a big impulse for the development of the city. First, in 1914, the War Department was transported, and later in 1920 the Department of Government buildings (Gedung Sate) followed.

Because of the special decoration on the roof, with somewhat resemblance to with a stick of sate, the building was known as Gedung Sate. It was built with total cost 6 million gulden. This is the first building that constructed by reinforced concrete technology in Indonesia.

In the beautiful shaped building-complex, by design of the architect J. Gerber (1921), both elements of western and eastern architecture were assimilated. You can see Gedung Sate is the only one big building around its area in 1925.
